Cedars Sinai Medical Center Case Study:
On April 20, 2020, Dr. Robert Huizenga, M.D., published a case study that reported a remarkable clinical turnaround of a 55-year old woman who had been hospitalized with COVID-19. Upon testing positive for COVID-19, the patient’s health constantly deteriorated until receiving an over the counter treatment of Nicotinamide Mononucleotide (NMN), which was successful in reversing her cytokine storm and alleviating her COVID-19 symptoms.
In mid- March the patient sought medical attention after coming down with body aches, a severe cough, and a 37.8°C fever. She later tested positive for SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. Over the next six days, the patient’s symptoms continued to worsen to the point that she was left bedridden. Her fever increased to 38.9°C and her saturated oxygen level, the amount of oxygen that your blood is carrying, had dropped to 93%, outside the normal range of 95% to 100%. An X-ray of her chest was taken; however, the results came back normal and clear of pneumonia. At this time, the patient was prescribed what was then the leading COVID-19 treatment, Hydroxychloroquine, and was additionally given Zithromax and Zinc Sulfate.
Over the next four days, her condition continued to deteriorate, despite receiving the leading COVID-19 treatment. She had developed pneumonia in both of her lungs and once again her fever increased, this time to 39.4 °C. At this time, she was rushed to Cedars Sinai Medical Center. Upon arrival, Dr. Huizenga tested the patient to determine the cause of her continuous and rapid deterioration. The results revealed that she had managed to fight off most of the COVID-19 virus, however, in doing so she had sent her immune system into overdrive and it was now attacking her. The patient was suffering from a cytokine storm, a condition which afflicts one out of every two fatal COVID-19 cases.
Cytokines are powerful chemicals released by the human immune system to kill an attacking virus. However, when the body’s production of cytokines goes into overdrive, instead of helping defeat the virus the cytokines start to damage the body, known as a cytokine storm. The cytokine storm through an exaggerated and rapid pro-inflammatory response can give rise to complex pulmonary (lung), cardiac (heart), and hematologic (blood-clotting) conditions, which can be fatal.
Realizing his patient’s condition was quickly deteriorating and that the cytokine storm was the main driver, Dr. Huizenga looked to find something to fight the cytokine storm and the inflammation it was causing. Dr. Huizenga tried to obtain Tocilizumab, an immunosuppressant drug that inhibits or deactivates pro-inflammatory cytokines but was unable to as the patient had not yet been admitted to the ICU. Desperate, the patient agreed to try an over the counter cocktail consisting of NMN, Betaine, and NaCl while continuing to take Zinc Sulfate.
Within 36 hours of taking the NMN cocktail treatment, the patient’s inflammation had improved, and her fever had started to subside. After another twelve hours, the patient was no longer bedridden and showed drastically improved symptoms. After five days, the patient was discharged from the hospital and was allowed to return home. Her saturated oxygen level was up, and a chest x-ray showed less pneumonia in her lungs. After being on the NMN cocktail treatment for twelve days, the patient tested negative for COVID-19, displayed no symptoms, had normal saturated oxygen level, and only the smallest amount of residual pneumonia left in her lungs.
Since, Dr. Huizenga has treated another two elderly, COVID-19 patients with the same NMN cocktail treatment. Both of the respective patients within 36-48 hours reported alleviation from symptoms including fever, cough, chest pain, headache, and low energy.
